Properties
Regulatory Status
CIR-affirmed safe for rinse-off and leave-on use when formulated below furocoumarin thresholds. Well-tolerated skin conditioning and antioxidant ingredient with good safety profile; primary concern is furocoumarin-mediated phototoxicity in leave-on products, requiring 5-MOP not to exceed 15 ppm in finished formulation.
Not specifically restricted by FDA for cosmetic use. Widely used in cosmetics under standard safety substantiation requirements. Formulators should monitor furocoumarin content and restrict leave-on concentrations accordingly.
