Chamomilla Recutita (Chamomile) Flower Extract
Description
Hydroethanolic or glycolic extract of Matricaria chamomilla (German chamomile) flowers. Principal actives: (-)-alpha-bisabolol (anti-inflammatory, wound healing, penetration enhancer) and chamazulene (anti-inflammatory, characteristic blue colour formed during steam distillation from matricine). Inhibits arachidonic acid-derived inflammatory mediators via 5-LOX and COX-1/2 suppression. Additional flavonoid content (apigenin, luteolin) contributes antioxidant and soothing activity. Widely used in sensitive-skin, atopic, and wound-healing formulations.

Regulatory Status
Chamomilla recutita flower extract is a well-established anti-inflammatory and soothing botanical active used across sensitive-skin, atopic, wound-healing, and baby-care formulations. Core actives are (-)-alpha-bisabolol and chamazulene. Anti-inflammatory mechanism involves 5-LOX and COX-1/2 pathway inhibition. The extract belongs to the Asteraceae (Compositae) family: sesquiterpene lactone cross-sensitization is documented in Compositae-allergic individuals, though German chamomile's lactone profile is lower-risk than arnica or Roman chamomile. EU and US permitted without restriction. Standardisation to bisabolol content via HPLC is recommended for batch-to-batch consistency.
Permitted without restriction. Sesquiterpene lactone content (Compositae/Asteraceae family) relevant for cross-sensitization in confirmed composite-sensitive individuals. MoCRA safety substantiation required.
