Regulatory Status
Safe for cosmetic use at typical concentrations. Natural, water-soluble polysaccharide extracted from Western larch (Larix spp.), consisting of galactose and arabinose units in approximately 6:1 ratio. Approved FDA food additive since 1965; GRAS notification accepted 2000. Freely permitted in EU with no annex restrictions. High molecular weight precludes meaningful dermal penetration. No sensitization, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, or reproductive toxicity signals identified. Reduces TEWL, supports skin barrier, and enhances hydration with excellent safety profile.
No 21 CFR cosmetic-specific restriction. FDA food substance database lists arabinogalactan (UNII: SL4SX1O487) as approved direct food additive. Permitted in essential oils, nonnutritive sweeteners, flavor bases, nonstandardized dressings, and pudding mixes. No adverse cosmetic-use findings reported to FDA.
