Regulatory Status
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract is a well-characterised, widely used plant extract with a strong regulatory and clinical safety record in cosmetics. CIR Expert Panel (2007) concluded safe in current practices of use provided anthraquinone content does not exceed the industry-established 50 ppm limit. EU CosIng lists the ingredient as Permitted for use in cosmetics with no concentration restriction; functions include emollient, humectant, skin conditioning, and oral care. ECHA REACH registration confirms use in cosmetics and personal care products with no CLP hazard classification assigned to the cosmetic-grade extract. EWG Skin Deep rates decolorised/inner-leaf preparations at score 1–2 (low hazard); score can be higher for non-decolorised whole-leaf products due to anthraquinone content. Minor sensitisation risk exists in predisposed individuals. No reproductive or developmental toxicity concerns at topical cosmetic use levels.
