Broad INCI covering hundreds of marine macroalgae species, not a single defined ingredient. EU permitted with no concentration limits. CIR safety clearance covers 32 brown algae species (2019). For CPSR, species, extraction solvent, and supplier CoA are required; generic INCI alone is insufficient for EU Article 10 compliance. Flag arsenic risk for brown algae (arsenosugars); require supplier CoA with As ≤3 mg/kg, Pb ≤5 mg/kg, Hg ≤0.1 mg/kg. Endocrine binding data for Fucus vesiculosus (ERa/ERb IC50) warrants flagging for high-concentration leave-on products.

CIR 2019 concluded 32 brown algae-derived ingredients safe at present use concentrations; data insufficient for remaining 50 species. Several species GRAS for food use (21 CFR 172.365, 184.1120).
