Regulatory Status
CAS 129702-02-9. EU: permitted ingredient listed in CosIng (Ref No. 31660) with no Annex III/V/VI restrictions. Not subject to EU polyacrylamide Annex III entry 131 restriction (free acrylamide). CIR Expert Panel (March 2022) concluded safe in present practices of use and concentration, provided acrylamide monomer in finished formulations does not exceed 5 ppm. Safety not evaluated for airbrush application. Used in 117 formulations per 2022 VCRP data; maximum reported use 7% leave-on (mascaras), up to 19.4% in dentifrices. Practical note: no systemic concern due to high molecular weight and negligible absorption; acrylamide monomer impurity control essential in QC SOPs.
FDA classifies as a cosmetic ingredient, not a sunscreen active. Listed as approved inactive ingredient in FDA databases. No specific concentration limits imposed. Reported in 117 cosmetic formulations in 2022 VCRP data; maximum use 7% leave-on, up to 19.4% in dentifrices. CIR Expert Panel issued final safety assessment April 2022: safe as used provided acrylamide monomer does not exceed 5 ppm in finished formulations. Safety not assessed for airbrush application routes.
